I wrote a First Aid article last week recapping the potential dangers of tipping over a cup of instant noodles and the burn damage they can cause especially to children. NPR did a piece on this that caught my attention in 2011 and since then, little has been done in the way of cup design, first aid awareness and parent awareness. I think everyone should be aware of the potential first aid dangers here and be able to make some really easy adjustments to put an end to this problem.
There are two factors with these noodle soups that make them potentially dangerous. Just two issues. They are as follows:
Noodles stay hot longer, and stick to skin.
The cups in which they are served are too easily tipped over.
Everyone wants their soup to be hot, so – just take the contents out of the questionable packaging and put it into a bowl that won’t tip easily. The problem is solved with out taking a CPR/AED and First Aid class – yes – that was a free first Aid class right there.
All joking aside – it takes a little awareness and about 2 minutes to wash out that proper serving bowl. We have seen that manufacturers aren’t going to change their packaging any time soon.
The consequences of not taking these steps can be hospital stays, and multiple surgeries for a child. Not to mention possible scaring and loss of flexibility, etc.
The above information focuses on prevention, which, in CPR/First Aid world, is really where we should focus. But accidents do happen.
So let’s try to get everyone straight on this.
When someone is burned – Do the following:
immediately run cold water over the burn for at least 10 minutes.
You will need to look at a clock to measure your time as 10 minutes can seem like 10 years.
Decide if it’s serious enough to go to the ER. Any open wounds or any areas of blistered burns that are larger than the patient’s own hands are ER qualifications.
Any doubts should qualify an ER visit.
Don’t be afraid to call 911 if needed!
Please do not do the following:
Do not directly ice a burn.
Do not put butter, or anything greasy on a burn.
Do not put any ointment on a burn
Do not pop blisters (Yes gentlemen, this means you)
Do not put any other condiments on a burn. We are not making sandwiches here.
